United Airlines has announced a special refund policy for passengers amid upcoming flight restrictions due to a federal government shutdown. The airline's CEO, Scott Kirby, confirmed that all travelers who prefer not to fly during this period can request refunds, including those with non-refundable tickets. The government plans to reduce flights at approximately 40 major airports across the United States, affecting around 4,000 flights daily.

The reductions are part of safety measures to address staffing shortages among air traffic controllers, an issue stemming from the shutdown. The affected airports are expected to be announced shortly, with the FAA working closely with airlines to implement the necessary adjustments.

Impact and Airline Responses

United Airlines indicated that domestic flights outside of hub-to-hub and regional routes might be more affected, while international and hub-to-hub flights are expected to operate normally. The airline has included eight major hubs: Chicago O'Hare (ORD), Denver (DEN), Guam (GUM), Houston (IAH), Los Angeles (LAX), Newark (EWR), San Francisco (SFO), and Washington Dulles (IAD).

Other U.S. airlines have provided varying estimates, with American Airlines suggesting most routes will remain unaffected. Southwest Airlines and Alaska Airlines are awaiting official guidance, while Jet Blue, Allegiant, and Spirit did not respond by the deadline. Officials also noted that aviation staff considered essential are required to work without pay, adding operational challenges.

Regulators stressed that they are working to ensure safety and minimize passenger disruption, promising to reveal affected airports on November 6. The airlines are expected to continue updating travelers and adjusting schedules while restrictions are in effect, seeking to reduce inconvenience during this unprecedented operational period.
