United Airlines has announced that from 2027 MileagePlus members will no longer be able to earn Premier elite status through flight segments, and that the top Premier 1K tier will require 32,000 Premier Qualifying Points (PQPs), up from 28,000. According to The Points Guy, the changes were set out in a memo to members on Tuesday 13 October 2026.
At present, members can qualify either through PQPs alone or through a combination of Premier Qualifying Flights (PQFs) and a lower PQP total. From 2027, PQPs will be the only route. One Mile at a Time lists the 2027 thresholds as 6,000 PQPs for Silver, 12,000 for Gold, 18,000 for Platinum and 32,000 for 1K.
The points-only thresholds for Silver, Gold and Platinum are unchanged. The flight-based options being removed were 15 PQFs plus 5,000 PQPs for Silver, 30 plus 10,000 for Gold, 45 plus 15,000 for Platinum and 60 plus 22,000 for 1K. Live and Let's Fly calculates that members using the flights-and-points path face a 20% rise in required PQPs, while for 1K the increase is about 14% over the current points-only figure and more than 45% over the 60-flight route.
Live and Let's Fly says the changes take effect on 1 January 2027 for travellers earning status for 2028. The Points Guy adds that members must still take at least four flights a year on United or United Express to be Premier-eligible; partner flights do not count towards that minimum.
Members with an eligible United credit card will receive a deposit equal to 5% of the PQPs needed for their current tier: 300 for Silver, 600 for Gold, 900 for Platinum and 1,600 for 1K. Live and Let's Fly says this depends on status as of 1 February 2027 and on an eligible card account being open by 31 December 2026. It also reports that the annual spending-based PQP cap on the United Club Card and United Club Business Card is rising to 32,000.
Jarad Fisher, United's president of MileagePlus, told The Points Guy the aim was to give members "one, consistent metric" and to invest more in those investing in the airline. The Points Guy describes it as the second significant loyalty shake-up of 2026.
Commentators are critical. One Mile at a Time notes that United is the first of the three largest US carriers to raise requirements for 2027 and compares 1K's $32,000 airfare-spend equivalent with $28,000 for Delta Diamond Medallion and $18,180 for American Executive Platinum. A second Points Guy piece argues that frequent flyers on shorter, cheaper routes will be hit hardest, and notes that Atmos Rewards, the programme for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines, will offer distance, flight-count and spend routes from 2027. It also suggests higher fares, up around 20% year on year, may partly explain the new thresholds. Live and Let's Fly questions whether United risks losing valuable customers who narrowly miss 1K.
The sources do not detail changes to Star Alliance partner earning or benefits.
