Volotea, a Spanish low-cost airline headquartered at Barcelona El Prat, is preparing to establish a new operational base at Montpellier Airport in France, scheduled for early November 2026. The airline plans to station one Airbus A320-200 aircraft at the new base, which aims to streamline routes and expand connectivity in the region. This strategic move will enable Volotea to introduce four additional destinations: Bordeaux Mérignac, Madrid Barajas, Tenerife Sur, and Lanzarote, thereby enhancing its regional network and service offerings.
Currently, Volotea is the second-largest airline operating at Montpellier, claiming a 23.2% market share by scheduled capacity, just behind Transavia France. The airline offers over 5,100 weekly seats from Montpellier, utilizing aircraft based elsewhere, reflecting a focused growth approach. The expansion is aligned with the carrier's goal to increase regional connectivity and provide affordable travel options across France and neighboring countries.
Network and Fleet Strategy
From its base at Barcelona El Prat, Volotea provides flights to numerous destinations, with the fleet primarily consisting of Airbus A320-200 aircraft. Its route network includes key leisure and business hubs, facilitating convenient connections within Europe. The airline competes with other low-cost carriers in the region, such as Transavia France, by offering cost-effective, flexible travel options and expanding its European footprint.
This expansion at Montpellier underscores the broader trend among low-cost carriers to establish regional bases that boost local economies and increase passenger traffic. The move also anticipates growing demand for leisure travel in the upcoming years, particularly in Europe.
