British Airways lists higher Silver and Gold tier point targets

According to Head for Points, British Airways briefly published higher tier point requirements for Silver and Gold status in The British Airways Club, to apply from 1 April 2027, and then removed the information from ba.com. There has been no formal announcement, so the figures are unconfirmed by the airline.

What the page said

Head for Points, which describes the story as an exclusive, reports that a page on ba.com stated the requirements from 1 April 2027. It supplied a screenshot and quoted the text. The tier points needed in each collection year, which runs from 1 April to 31 March, were listed as follows:

  • Blue: 0 tier points
  • Bronze: 3,500 tier points (unchanged)
  • Silver: 8,000 tier points, up from 7,500
  • Gold: 21,000 tier points, up from 20,000

Head for Points says there appears to be no change to qualification by number of flights, with Silver remaining at 50 flights and Bronze at 25 flights. The site assumes the page went live early by mistake but that the information is correct. That is its own interpretation, and British Airways has not commented in the source material.

A mixed picture on earning

Head for Points notes that the rise comes at a time when British Airways has been making tier points easier to earn in some ways. From 1 April 2027, the tier points available through the British Airways American Express Premium Plus Card rises from 2,500 to 3,000 a year. The cap on tier points from Sustainable Aviation Fuel credits has been increased to 2,000 a year, and bonus tier points on flexible cash tickets have also been increased, according to the site.

The publication suggests two possible explanations: that the airline was short of elite members, or that higher fares linked to the Middle East conflict and rising fuel prices are pushing more members into the top tiers in a scheme based on spend. Neither is confirmed by British Airways.

What this means for travellers

If the figures stand, members chasing or holding Silver or Gold in the 2027/28 year would need 500 and 1,000 more tier points respectively than at present. Bronze and the flight-count routes appear unaffected.

  • Members planning their 2027/28 flying should treat 8,000 and 21,000 as the likely targets until British Airways confirms them.
  • Those who hold the American Express Premium Plus Card may offset part of the increase through the higher card allowance, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel credits may also help, within the limits reported.
  • Those weighing a switch to another airline may wish to wait for an official statement.

It is not yet known whether British Airways will confirm the changes, or whether the requirements apply to all members in the same way.
