Garuda Indonesia is actively developing Denpasar as a secondary international hub to serve eastern Indonesia, according to a report by the state-owned news agency Antara. The airline has initiated a Jakarta Soekarno-Hatta - Denpasar - Tembagapura - Jayapura route, which commenced operations on March 29, 2026, operating four times weekly with a Boeing 737-800.
The strategy aims to enhance Denpasar's international connectivity, particularly with destinations in Indonesia's Papua region. Garuda Indonesia is also connecting Denpasar with prominent international airports such as Melbourne Airport, Seoul Incheon, Singapore Changi, Tokyo Narita, and Sydney Kingsford Smith, although the airline's capacity from Bali remains significantly lower than from its main base in Jakarta.
Background and Future Outlook
According to data from ch-aviation, Garuda Indonesia's capacity from Bali Airport currently includes 20,821 weekly scheduled departure seats, compared to 112,832 from Jakarta. The airline’s efforts focus on increasing Denpasar's role as a regional hub to facilitate more international traffic and support increased tourism and business links.
Garuda’s expansion plans include nurturing Denpasar as a transit point for traffic destined for remote eastern Indonesia and neighboring countries. The carrier also operates supplementary domestic flights through its sister low-cost airline, Citilink, to destinations including Dili and other Indonesian cities.
Rendra Maha Putera, an official from Garuda Indonesia, emphasized the importance of maximising Denpasar’s potential as an international hub, particularly in coordination with eastern Indonesian destinations. The move aligns with Indonesia’s broader aviation infrastructure development efforts, which seek to improve regional connectivity and economic growth.
