A Singapore Airlines Airbus A350-900 flying from San Francisco to Singapore turned back over the Pacific on Wednesday 14 October 2026 after a passenger reportedly became unruly, according to One Mile at a Time. Flight SQ32 landed back at San Francisco after almost eight hours in the air, and passengers continued to Singapore later that night on a replacement flight.
One Mile at a Time reports that the aircraft, registered 9V-SJC, took off from San Francisco at 12:49pm local time, roughly an hour after its scheduled 11:45am departure. It climbed to 36,000 feet and flew west for around four hours before turning back. It touched down in San Francisco at 8:32pm, 7 hours 43 minutes after departure.
The report says a passenger became unruly and the crew judged that returning was the safest option. Authorities then boarded the aircraft to remove the passenger.
The outlet also quotes a Reddit user who claims to have been seated a few rows away. That account, which is unverified, describes the man screaming, kicking seats and trying to reach an emergency exit about three hours into the flight, and says the FBI and San Francisco police boarded and arrested him after landing.
One Mile at a Time’s author assessed the options using the flight map at the time of the turn. The aircraft was well north of Hawaii, which made it unsuitable, and Tokyo would have meant at least a couple more hours of flying. Anchorage may have been marginally closer, the author suggests, while the Aleutian Islands were the only other closer option and would normally be reserved for a life-threatening emergency. This is the outlet’s own analysis rather than an official explanation.
Because the crew had effectively completed an ultra-long-haul duty, they could not operate the onward journey. Rather than cancel, Singapore Airlines put the same aircraft back into service. According to the report, it reached the gate at 8:41pm, pushed back at 11:19pm and took off at 11:49pm as flight SQ9031.
The author assumes a crew was drawn from one of the airline’s other San Francisco services, since it operates at least two flights a day on the route, but this is the writer’s inference rather than something confirmed by the airline. The report adds that passengers spent well over 24 hours on board in total, counting the initial flight, the roughly 16-hour second flight and time on the ground.
It is not yet clear whether Singapore Airlines has commented or whether the passenger faces charges.
