Passengers on Emirates flight EK517 from Delhi to Dubai faced a delay of around 17.5 hours after a bird strike damaged the nose cone of the Boeing 777 operating the service, according to Simple Flying. The flight was due to leave Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) at 4:25 PM local time on Saturday, 17 October, but departed at about 10 AM on Sunday.
Simple Flying reports that the aircraft struck a bird while arriving in Delhi from Dubai on Saturday. Emirates confirmed the incoming flight had encountered a bird strike and said the return service would be delayed while the aircraft was repaired. Video footage reportedly showed airport staff inspecting visible damage to the nose cone.
The airline first revised the departure to 7 AM on Sunday before the aircraft finally left at around 10 AM. Emirates did not say how many passengers were affected or give a detailed account of the damage. No injuries were reported in the coverage cited, and the disruption concerned the onward departure rather than an emergency landing.
According to Simple Flying, the nose cone covers the aircraft's weather radar, and damage to the area can require technical inspections and repairs before the jet is cleared to fly. Even if an aircraft lands safely, engineers may need to assess it before approving another flight. Emirates stated that the necessary repairs would be carried out and that passenger and crew safety would not be compromised.
Simple Flying notes that taking a long-haul aircraft out of service can ripple through an airline's network, because aircraft rotations are planned around several flights. Delays can affect later departures, available capacity and crew scheduling, and can cause missed connections for passengers continuing beyond the hub. The extent depends on fleet availability and how quickly the schedule is reorganised. Emirates did not announce any broader operational impact in this case.
It is not yet clear how many passengers were affected, how extensive the damage was, or whether other flights were disrupted.
