Lufthansa is scheduled to operate its final Airbus A340-600 passenger service on 18 October, ending the type's career with the German airline, according to AeroTime. Flight LH419 is due to leave Washington Dulles (IAD) at 5.55 pm local time and land at Frankfurt (FRA) at 7.55 am on 19 October. The schedule is subject to operational changes.

The final flight

AeroTime reports that the aircraft assigned to the last passenger service had not been independently confirmed at the time of writing. Lufthansa has kept four A340-600s for its remaining operations, registered D-AIHW, D-AIHX, D-AIHY and D-AIHZ. They are roughly 17 to 18 years old and have flown mainly from Frankfurt to New York (JFK) and Washington Dulles.

The airline introduced the type in 2003, with deliveries continuing until 2009. The fleet once totalled 24 aircraft. Lufthansa postponed the retirement several times because of delays to replacement aircraft, AeroTime says, and additional Boeing 787-9s and Airbus A350-900s have since supported the withdrawal.

Why it is leaving now

Lufthansa Group confirmed in April 2026 that the last four A340-600s would leave the fleet in October. According to AeroTime, the decision was part of a wider package of capacity and fleet measures introduced amid rising kerosene prices and extra costs linked to industrial disputes. The group also plans to ground two Boeing 747-400s for the 2026/2027 winter season. The measures are intended to speed up fleet modernisation and cut operating costs.

The aircraft and what remains

The A340-600 has four Rolls-Royce Trent 500-series engines. The remaining aircraft have a four-class cabin with 8 first-class, 56 business-class, 28 premium-economy and 189 economy seats, 281 in total.

Lufthansa will still operate four-engine passenger aircraft. AeroTime notes that the A340-300, A380 and Boeing 747 remain in service, although newer twin-engine aircraft are taking a growing share of intercontinental flying.

What this means for travellers

  • Passengers who like to fly specific aircraft lose the chance to fly the A340-600 on Lufthansa scheduled services after this flight.
  • The four remaining aircraft mainly served Frankfurt to New York JFK and Washington Dulles, so those routes are the most likely to see a different aircraft and cabin. AeroTime does not say which aircraft will replace the type on each route.
  • The A340-600 had first class, which is a four-class layout. The sources do not say whether the replacement aircraft on those routes will offer the same cabins, so travellers should check their booking for the aircraft and cabin shown.
  • Passengers holding tickets for LH419 on 18 October should check the flight status, as the schedule is subject to operational changes.
