JetBlue has raised its checked baggage fees for the second time in 2026. The new charges apply to tickets purchased on or after 3 November 2026, and lift the minimum price of a first checked bag on most North American, Latin American and Caribbean routes from $39 to $50.

The new fees

According to Simple Flying and The Points Guy, a first bag on flights within the US, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean now costs $50 off-peak if prepaid, or $60 if added within 24 hours of departure. On peak dates the first bag costs $55 prepaid or $70 at the later stage. One Mile at a Time summarises this as $50-70 for a first bag on a domestic flight.

  • First bag, off-peak: $50 prepaid, $60 later (previously $39 and $49).
  • First bag, peak: $55 prepaid, $70 later (previously $49 and $59).
  • Second bag, off-peak: $70 prepaid, $75 later (previously $59 and $69).
  • Second bag, peak: $75 prepaid, $85 later (previously $69 and $79).

Simple Flying adds that a third bag costs $200 regardless of date, and that the first bag on the cheapest transatlantic economy fares starts at $80, rising to $100 for late purchases.

Why JetBlue says it is happening

A JetBlue spokesperson said, according to The Points Guy, that the change "helps us keep our base fares competitive while giving customers the choice to pay for a checked bag only if they need one." The airline pointed to rising fuel and operating costs.

One Mile at a Time argues that higher oil prices are part of the picture, that JetBlue has not made a profit since before the pandemic, and that the airline may hope higher bag fees push customers towards its co-branded credit card. Simple Flying reports that JetBlue posted a $257 million third-quarter loss.

Price history and industry reaction

Simple Flying calculates that the minimum first-bag fee has risen from $35 in May 2024 to $39 in March 2026 and now $50, an increase of about 43%. The Points Guy describes the jump from the previous lowest fee as 28%.

The Points Guy reports that after JetBlue's March increase, United followed, then Delta Air Lines, American and Southwest within weeks. One Mile at a Time says it would be "shocked" if other airlines did not match this latest move, though no rival has announced an increase in response so far, according to the sources.

What this means for travellers

  • Existing bookings: tickets bought before 3 November keep the old fee schedule, including holiday trips, according to Simple Flying and The Points Guy.
  • Prepay: adding a bag more than 24 hours before departure saves $5-15 per bag compared with paying later.
  • Peak dates: fees are higher on peak days, which cover much of late May to early September and major holidays. Simple Flying says March is the only month in 2027 without a peak date.
  • Total cost: One Mile at a Time estimates $100-140 for a one-bag round trip... per person, and $400-560 for a family of four on a round trip. Simple Flying gives $110 prepaid or $140 at the airport for one peak-season round trip.
  • Exemptions: Mint customers, TrueBlue Mosaic members and eligible JetBlue credit cardholders still receive free bags, as do BlueFirst bookings, according to The Points Guy.
  • Carry-on: The Points Guy notes that a full-size carry-on is still allowed on every fare, including Blue Basic.

When comparing fares, add baggage costs, since rivals may raise their own fees.
