United first airline to stream personal Spotify on seatback screens

United Airlines has become the first airline to let passengers stream their personal Spotify accounts directly on seatback screens, according to Travel Daily Media. The feature, developed with Starlink and Spotify, is available now on equipped aircraft and is due to reach half of the carrier's fleet by next spring.

How the feature works

Passengers scan a QR code on the seatback screen to securely link their Spotify account. Travel Daily Media reports that they can then access more than 100 million tracks, along with millions of podcasts and videos, and can pick up where they left off before boarding.

The service runs over Starlink Wi-Fi. That connection is the reason the rollout depends on how many aircraft have been fitted with the technology and with seatback screens.

What the companies said

Andrew Nocella, United's Chief Commercial Officer, said: "Our customers are used to streaming entertainment that's tailored to them, and that level of personalisation shouldn't stop when they board one of our aeroplanes." Ian Geller, Spotify's VP of Business Development, described the integration as a major milestone and said it creates a new way for passengers to enjoy Spotify in the air.

Wider inflight plans

The announcement sits within a broader upgrade of the United Airlines cabin experience. Travel Daily Media says passengers can already access more than 2,500 hours of premium content from platforms including Apple TV and HBO Max. Starlink Wi-Fi is now available on more than half of United's daily flights, and the airline aims to offer connectivity across its entire fleet by the end of 2027. It also aims to have 219,000 seatback screens installed by the end of 2027.

What this means for travellers

  • Spotify users can listen to their own playlists, podcasts and saved content on the seatback screen rather than relying on a generic inflight music selection.
  • Access is via a QR code scan, so passengers should have their phone and Spotify login to hand.
  • The feature depends on Starlink Wi-Fi and a seatback screen, so it will not be on every aircraft yet. Coverage is expected to reach half the fleet by next spring.
  • The sources do not say whether a paid Spotify subscription is needed, whether the Wi-Fi is free for this use, or which routes and aircraft types are equipped first. Travellers who care about the feature should check with United before booking.
